20th Open Criteria for Judging

IPMS Baguio 20th Open Criteria for Judging the categories:

 –DEFINITION OF TERMS–

1) Basic construction

Includes flash, mold seams, sink marks, copyright marks, ejector-pin mark, provision for motorization

and similar molding flaws eliminated. ; Glue Marks and buildups should not be visible on model; For

Advance class only – All accessories or aftermarket parts, whether resin, photo-etched parts or plastic

part should integrate well within the basic model.)

2) Seam lines

Filled, sanded and re-scribed properly. seam line should be filled/puttied if not present on the actual

model.

3) Alignments

Wings/tailplanes/landing gears all aligned correctly. Bombs/ rockets/ pylons aligned correctly with

aircraft and with each other. Road wheels on vehicle or tracked vehicle align properly, all wheels/track

sitting firmly on ground, Main gun parallel to turret centerline when viewed from above, Track Sag

should be duplicated where appropriate. Gap/overlap at point where track end joints eliminated.

Additional corrections for Advance class only. Advance class only to be supported with documentation if

corrections are made for cockpit interior.

All clear part should be free of blemish or freezing effects due to adhesives or super glue.

6) Paint Job Accuracy / Paint Job Complexity.

Demonstration of difficult painting and weathering skills, including the simulation of depth and

dimension of an otherwise plain color scheme or an attempt at an intricate camouflage scheme, as well

as an effort in reproduction of weathering effects.

7) Paint Job Quality

The model’s surface, once painted, should show no signs of the construction process. (glue, file, or

sanding marks; fingerprints; obvious discontinuities between kit plastic and filler materials; etc.) Finish

should be even and smooth, unless irregularities in the actual vehicle’s finish are being duplicated. Such

irregularities should be documented. No brush marks, lint, brush hairs, etc. No random differences in

sheen of finish caused by misapplication of final clear coats.

8) Weathering/Chipping

Should show concern for consistent throughout the model and be in accordance with the conditions in

which the real subject was operating. Be careful to distinguish some of the purposely “heavy-handed”

paint scheme from over-zealous weathering. Extreme weathering should be documented, weathering

should not be used in attempt to hide flaws in construction or finishing. Chipping, if present, should

show concern for scale e.g., size of chipped areas to be in accordance in which the real model was

operating

10) Detailing

Minor: Exterior detailing e.g. drilling out gun barrels, modified pitot tubes, Moderate: Attempts at

component remodeling/conversion, opening up of some panels, Advance: major reconstruction or

conversion of the original kit, including the replacement of cockpit, engine bay or gun bay, Chrome parts

should be correctly represented and should be just as free of surface blemishes and evidences of the

construction process as the painted components. Engine and chassis detailing should be done to a level

consistent with detailing on the rest of the model. Working parts, if any (e.g., opening hoods or doors),

should match the level of workmanship on the rest of the model. Such parts should operate realistically,

and the operating mechanism(s) should be in scale if visible.

11) Decals

Wherever decal is used, it should be aligned properly, no silvering or bubbling of decal film. Decal films

should be eliminated or hidden to make the marking appear painted on, no random difference in sheen

of finish e.g., matt, satin, gloss, cloudiness, caused by misapplication of final coats.

12) Modification

Usage of accessories, aftermarket parts or other modified plastic part should integrate well within the

basic model.

13) Creativity

Creativity includes the originality of model posing and color usage.

14) Figures

• Basic construction and preparation

Seams filled in where appropriate e.g., where arms meet shoulder, legs meet boot, no

visible nubs, flashes, sanding marks, or printing supports (if 3d printed) if figure is on a base,

check if figure is mounted properly. (e.g.: no gaps between feet and ground)

• Paint Application Overall

• Smoothness

No visible brush strokes or marks (unless intended in the overall style), no uneven surfaces

such as paint tide marks, orange peel colors are well blended or smooth color transitions or

gradients.

• Neatness

Straight edges, paint does not go beyond borders no surface left unpainted Correct Textures

or Finish. Check if areas are supposed to be ether matte, glossy, reflective, satin, metallic,

etc.

• Use of Color

Correct use of colors (flesh tones, shadows, light, etc.) color composition, colors are eye

catching.

• Detail Work

Eyes should be painted and symmetrical, not wall-eyed or cross eyed other details painted

such as accessories (e.g.: buckles, jewelry, pouches, etc.) applicable weathering of shoes and

other parts in relation to the environment depicted by the base. (if figure is presented on a

base)

ADVANCED PAINTING TECHNIQUES Overall 10 Points

• Use of advanced painting techniques

Advanced techniques such as NMM (non-metallic metal) or OSL (object source lighting), off

base lighting, edge highlighting was used and are convincing and well executed intricate

painted details were added such as free hand drawings, textures, or patterns scoring

sample: – 0 if not attempted or not applicable, 1-9 depending on level of execution, 10

perfectly executed technique

15) Diorama

• MESSAGE

Combination of model and believable setting that tells a story, message should be obvious,

shouldn’t have to strain the eyes to see it.

• ARTISTIC COMPOSITION

Strength of diorama story line or mood. The base should provide a focal point for the scene and

fit or enhance the storyline or mood of diorama. Diorama with a well-defined focal point

highlighting a simple story generally will have a stronger presentation than those attempting to

portray an entire battlefield.

• TECHNICAL MODELLING SKILL

The diorama should comprise of individual elements such as vehicle, figures, structures, ground

work, foliage, etc.) combined to form a realistic setting. Painting skill are also considered in the

technical balance.

• CONSISTENT REALISM

Each of elements represented in diorama should be believable in its own right and consistent

with the setting, action or mood being depicted. (E.g.: A tank crossing a muddy river would not

be perfectly clean, with no ripples on the water surface.)

• CREATIVITY / ORIGINALITY

The story, mood or atmosphere created by the diorama should be obvious, imagination and

inventiveness in story or setting the mood can lift a diorama out of the ordinary. –CRITERIA FOR JUDGING—
